What is a field day?
Field days are working events. For some, it is a chance to go back in time while others, it's a specific opportunity to connect with the service that a family member has served. While all types of volunteer labor are welcome, we are in need of the following: welders, carpenters, plumbers & electricians. You may also volunteer your time during these field days by cleaning, painting, needle gunning and doing any other simple daily tasks. One perk is that in many cases participants bunk, shower, eat, and live aboard the ship for the duration of the field day just like in the US Navy.
When is the next field day? May I volunteer other times besides just during the field day?
Who can volunter during field day events?
ANYONE!! Whether you are a civilian, spouse, veteran or currently active duty service man or woman, you are welcome aboard with open arms. Together we can restore a gallant lady and bring her former glory back to Southwest Louisiana for all to behold.
What do I bring to a field day event?
Staying overnight on a Gearing Class Destroyer although fun, will still require your basic overnight items such as clothes, tennis shoes, toiletry products, towels, bedding/sleeping bag & pillows. Additional items may include the following: flashlights and any other special tools you like to use for specific work. You may also include clothes to wear for an evening of fun or a dinner off the ship during your brief stay.
How much does it cost? Do I need to register for this event?
The cost for attendance in our first field day is currently $30. This will cover all meals & expenses!
